Dispatch Rider and An Accident

At left is a Tinning painting titled: “Dispatch Driver of the 5th Canadian Armoured Division, Groningen, Holland” – a watercolour and goache painting over pencil on brown laid paper, and dated June 1945. This painting measures 47.8 cm high by 24.6 cm wide and it is in the Tinning fonds of Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa. (LAC Acct. No 1990-143-101). It is one of five on the same subject. A letter to his parents on 2 Oct 44 indicates his fascination with the subject. “… I’m doing a very interesting pic now. I saw a Dispatch Rider hit by a truck and his leg [was] cut and broken – he put up a clenched fist and howled. Poor guy – gosh it hurt. But he’ll be alright in case you are perturbed.” A portion of this airmail letter on blue paper with a black ink sketch of the accident (in Italy) is shown below.
