Canadian Tulip Festival – Ottawa

Injured Soldiers 1945; watercolour, pencil on paper; 38×57 cm; LAC 1990-143-127

The Canadian Tulip Festival is a tribute to the Canadian troops that liberated Holland in World War II. Operation “Canada” was the last action fought by the Canadian Army in the closing days of the war for the Dutch port of Delfzijl (April 23 – May 2, 1945). Sixty-two Canadians died in the fighting and one hundred and eighty men were wounded. On May 1st Tinning painted this scene of “men with face wounds” at the Cape Breton Highlanders’ Regimental Aid Post.
